‘Tesla autopilot will be safer with more sensors’
The next generation of the autopilot of car producer Tesla will be powered by more radar and a new triple camera. Some of the equipment is already in production. The new sensor suite will enable autonomous driving in level 3 and potentially level 4 of fully autonomous driving.
Tesla introduced the first Autopilot hardware suite, a front-facing camera, a front-facing radar, and 360 degrees ultrasonic sensor in 2014. In 2015 the car producer released the first ‘Autopilot update’ (v7.0) to introduce features like Autosteer and Autopark.
Improvements software
Tesla made several improvements of the software and released new features on the same hardware, but the sensor suite still had its limitations, according to Electrec.co which bases the information on sources which knowledge of the autopilot program and technologies that have already been introduced in recent models.
To improve safety there will be more cameras and four extra sensors.
